Obituary for Elton Merritt Evans Jr.

Elton Merritt Evans, Jr., "Big E", a 37 year resident of Virginia Beach, passed away on Sunday, July 10 2016 at the age of 83. Born in 1932 in Danbury, Connecticut to Elton M. Evans, Sr. and Myrtle E. Evans. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his sister, Jean Martineau and his wife of 61 years, Beverly E. Evans. Elton graduated from Danbury High School in 1950 and joined the Navy where he served as a machinist mate on an aircraft carrier training ship during the Korean War. Elton married Beverly Evelyn Hallock in 1952 and raised two children while working full time for Bard Parker and Kimberly Clark as a maintenance electrician. Elton relocated to Virginia Beach in 1979 with his wife and family, where he continued working in electrical maintenance for Weyerhauser and finally American GFM, retiring in 1997. Elton's passions included Nascar and Jeff Gordon, fishing, cheering on the Redskins, tinkering with electronics, appliances, tracking hurricanes and spending time with family. His knowledge of electronics and maintenance was something he would share with friends, neighbors, and family to help repair or troubleshoot anything from an outlet circuit, a television, or air conditioning system.

Elton is survived by his son, Elton M. Evans, III and wife, Laura of Mechanicsville, VA; daughter, Donna J. Evans of Virginia Beach, VA; granddaughter, Rachel E. Carr and husband, Michael, and soon to be born Baby Evelyn of Shakelfords, VA; grandson, Elton M. Evans, IV and fiancee, Kayla Jones of Mechanicsville, VA.

A service with military honors will be held at Graham Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 1112 Kempsville Road, Chesapeake on Saturday, July 16, 2016 at 11 a.m. with a reception to follow. Memorial contributions can be made in lieu of flowers to the Cancer Society of Virginia Beach, the Diabetes Foundation or the charity of your choice.
