Shirley Hodges Furlough, 88, went to be with her Lord in Heaven on January 16, 2016. Shirley was a native of South Norfolk where she was raised by her parents, the late Charles Leonard Hodges and Lucy Whitehurst Hodges and was very close to her siblings. Besides her parents she was predeceased by her siblings Charles Leonard Hodges, Jr., Walter Nelson Hodges, Sr., Gladys Harrell, Margaret Johnson and Lucy Stallings.

She was a graduate of South Norfolk High School, where she was proud to be the star Forward Center of the Girls’ Basketball team, May Queen and in many clubs. She loved sports the rest of her life and enjoyed playing with all her friends from the neighborhood. After she and Warren married she joined in the family business at Southland Appliance and retired as President. Shirley was kind, thoughtful and loved helping people, her family and friends were very important to her.

She is survived by her devoted and loving husband, Warren Leroy Furlough, Sr.; her beloved sons, Warren Leroy “Lee” Furlough, Jr. (Linda) and Timothy Allen Furlough; she was very proud of her grandsons, Alex and Connor Furlough; and her sister, Edith Lee. Shirley has many nieces and nephews who love her and will miss her; as well as her husband's sisters, Violet Spencer and Evelyn West. She was predeceased by a son, Dana Hodges Furlough.

The family will receive friends at Graham Funeral Home, 1112 Kempsville Road, Chesapeake on Wednesday, January 20, 2016 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. A service to celebrate her life will be held Thursday 11 a.m. at the funeral home with Pastor Stephen Lee Hodges of Providence Forge Presbyterian Church, Providence Forge, VA officiating. She will be laid to rest at Riverside Memorial Park, Norfolk.
