I had the distinct pleasure of not only being a gym student (and tryout for Cleveland Jr. High JV's) but also worked for Mr. Rice at his railroad salvage market when it was located on Centennial St. in Spartanburg. He was always good to me and I had a tremendous time working for him...learned a lot about patience, respect and life in general. He really enjoyed running that business. He left such a positive mark on me. Rest in peace Mr. Rice.

The Great Ice Storm in South Carolina in 79 knocked out all the power for a week. George and Carolyn had a big house and a fire place, and a Gas Grill on the back porch. My family, Josie , Jennifer, Troy, The Walden's, Pattie, Ralph, Joy, Chris, Brandon, John , Nancy,, Butch, another couple and George and Carolyn. It was 20 degrees, but we all slept downstairs, we kept the fire going and we cooked on the grill outside. It was a time that God taught you how to live in a pile and Forgiveness. It was a memory that will last until I get to Heaven and laugh again with George.

You were one of a kind George..I will always remember how you helped me and my family in our walk with God. And our inside joke , is that net or gross. I did cry, not with pity, but with joy. Because I know where you are at this very moment. So the tears that I cried for you, will leave a refreshing pool of water for those that follow. Butch, Nancy, John and my girl Carolyn you are in my family's prayers and thoughts.

I don't have too many memories with Bubb, but the ones that I do are so pleasant. He always put a smile on my face, he was such a sweet man. I will never forget the warm feeling of going over to Alex's house and being greeted by Nannie and Bubb as they returned home from the grocery store or wherever they had been. They're always so happy to see Alex and made me feel like part of the family, too. Bubb was really the ideal grandfather-type and I'm so happy that my best friend had him in her life for so long. It was an honor to know him.

There is one memory that Alex and I always laugh about. We were both visiting home from college and there was going to be a severe storm (can't remember if it was a hurricane or a tornado warning) and the news had instructed us to take cover. Alex, Nannie, Bubb and I (I think Austin was there too) all moved into the hallway to be away from the windows. Alex and I were scared and huddled on the floor and we looked up to see Nannie and Bubb sitting on dining room chairs which they had brought into the hallway, eating plates of food. We thought it was so funny how nonchalant they were about the whole thing, but it really lightened the mood and made us feel a lot better. They're such a cute couple.

Sending all my love to the Rice family. I love and miss you guys so much.

I met George" Bubba" as I called him, in 1978 through his son Jon, we were really good friends . Bubba and Momma Rice became my second family and home . Their impact on me personally and spiritually was, and still is a blessing today. Bubba you will missed by me and my family.

The first time I met George (Heybub) was a few months after my husband and I started dating. We traveled down to Virginia to spend time with his friends and family. It was less than 24 hours after I had met Heybub and Nic and I were sitting in his grandparent's living room talking to one another when Heybub leaned forward in his chair and asked the two of us "So what are your plans?" Nic and I began to say that we were going to meet up with friends over the next few days when Heybub interupted and said "No - what are your plans for the future? When are you getting married?" Nic and I looked at eachother in shock and Heybub continued on about how a professor had told him that if you find a woman who is both smart and beautiful then marry her and how he thought I was that and that we should get married. I come from a large family and have met very straightforward people up to that point but nothing prepared me for that question from Heybub!

I chuckle everytime I think back to this memory because this was a very Heybub thing to do. He was such a straight forward and caring soul. And a wise man!
